At the first plenary meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) on United Nations Security Council reform within the framework of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Chargé d’Affaires and Permanent Representative Vietnam to the United Nations Nguyen Hoang Nguyen reaffirmed Vietnam’s strong commitment to multilateralism and the UN’s central role in maintaining international peace and security.
He said Vietnam continues to support the enlargement of permanent and non-permanent membership of the UNSC, on the basis of equitable geographical representation and strengthening the voice and participation of developing countries.
Vietnam stressed the need to improve the transparency, inclusiveness, and effectiveness of the UNSC, including enhancing substantive exchanges between the Council and UN member states and improving the quality of interaction between the Security Council and the General Assembly. Permanent members should exercise restraint or use the veto with caution, in line with the goals and principles of the UN Charter.
