The artists, all in their 20s, competed in acrobatics, juggling, balance, magic, clowning, and sport circus. Their performances reflected the traditional culture of their country. Each performance was associated with a story or legend from the artists’ country of origin accompanied by that country’s traditional music. Spectator Vu Van Duc said: “Children and adults were equally excited by these performances. We enthusiastically applauded every show. Circus has developed amazingly.”

Unlike previous contests in which performances were adapted from other international award-winning performances, artists at this year’s contest took the initiative to introduce the traditional music of their countries into their performances. Hoang Minh Khanh, Director of the Vietnam Circus and Variety Arts College, said:The performances have become more sophisticated, combining music with choreography, circus, and performing arts. They demonstrate the talents of the directors and the artists.”

Artist Nguyen Thi Ha of Vietnam won a gold medal:I’m happy to have won a gold medal. I like my performance and will try to develop it for future contests.”

Gold medalist Phon Mali Detnakhon of Laos said she is happy that more people are becoming interested in circus.
