The United Nations Command (UNC) in South Korea, which manages the southern side of Panmunjom, made the decision amid growing speculation that US President Donald Trump may hold talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his scheduled trip to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit later this month.
According to the Dong-a Ilbo, one of South Korea’s three major newspapers, the suspension will last from October 27 to November 1, coinciding with President Trump’s visit to South Korea on October 29–30, on the sidelines of the APEC Summit.
The move follows a CNN report that US administration officials have privately discussed the possibility of arranging a meeting between Trump and Kim during the US president’s upcoming tour of Asia.
