Resolution 2788 reaffirms the UNSC’s role in recommending appropriate procedures or methods of adjustment for the peaceful settlement of disputes. Highlighting the need to prevent disputes from arising and escalating, the resolution further called on member states to take “necessary measures for the effective implementation of Security Council resolutions for peaceful settlement of disputes.”
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the Resolution, emphasizing its relevance amid ongoing conflicts around the world, including in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, and Haiti. “The architects of the United Nations Charter recognized that the peaceful resolution of disputes is the lifeline when geopolitical tensions escalate, unresolved disputes fuel the flames of conflict, and States lose trust in each other,” said Guterres.
