During an open debate of the UN Security Council on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question on Monday at the UN headquarters in New York, Nguyen Hai Luu, Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations, said civilians and critical civilian infrastructure must be protected amid the ongoing instability in the region.
He said maritime and aviation security and freedom of navigation and overflight should be maintained in accordance with international law, particularly the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Vietnam welcomed the resumption of talks between the US and Iran, aimed at resolving differences and ending the conflict, and commended the mediation efforts of Pakistan, Qatar, Oman, Türkiye, Switzerland, and other facilitators in advancing the negotiation process. Mr. Luu called on all parties to exercise restraint and to implement the agreements already reached in good faith.
Vietnam reaffirmed its consistent support for the legitimate and inalienable rights of the Palestinian people and reiterated its backing for a two-state solution based on the pre-1967 borders, in line with international law and relevant UN resolutions.
