Out of the new cases, 15 were imported and quarantined upon arrival.
Ho Chi Minh City tops the list with 1,009 new infections, followed by Dong Nai province with 997, and Binh Duong province with 826.
The capital city of Hanoi logged 72 new cases.
61 deaths were also announced the same day. Vietnam has so far reported 22,531 deaths of COVID-19.
A total of 1,301 recoveries were reported on Sunday, taking the total number of recoveries to 840,402.

More than 89.6 million vaccine doses have been administered to date, with just over 28.7 million people having received two doses.
