Europe calls for stronger stance on Greenland; US works to ease tensions with allies

(VOVWORLD) - France has called on the entire North American Treaty Organization (NATO) to organize an alliance-led drill on Greenland, amid shakeups in transatlantic relations due to disputes over the Arctic island.

"France calls for a NATO exercise in Greenland and is ready to contribute to it," the French President's office said on Wednesday, in response to US President Donald Trump's push to control the autonomous Danish territory, which has intensified divisions within the alliance.

The same day, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk urged Europe to not give in to the US pressure over Greenland control. Writing on X, Mr. Tusk said that “appeasement is always a sign of weakness”. “Europe cannot afford to be weak - neither against its enemies, nor ally," he added. He also expressed his backing for Europe taking a stronger stance, including possibly putting the bloc’s economic “bazooka,” the Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI), at the ready.

Meanwhile, in his address to Britain’s Parliament on Tuesday, US House Speaker Mike Johnson said that he had come to “calm the waters” between Washington and its European allies.
