German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said Germany and France have agreed that dialogue is open but “we will not allow ‌ourselves to be blackmailed”. This statement follows President Donald Trump’s warning last weekend that he will implement higher tariffs on imports from European allies until the US is allowed to buy Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.

EU leaders will discuss options at an emergency summit in Brussels on Friday. ‍One option is a package of tariffs on 107.7 billion USD worth of US goods that would kick in on February 6 after a six-month suspension.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer criticized President Trump’s tariff threats as “completely wrong” and warned that a trade war would benefit no one. He reiterated his position that Greenland is part of Denmark and its future is a matter for Greenland and Denmark alone to decide. London will maintain a dialogue with European allies, NATO, and the US to de-escalate tensions, said Keir.

European governments should not retaliate against any measures taken by the US in their dispute over ‌Greenland, ‌US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said  Monday. On the sidelines of the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, Bessent told reporters that “it would be very unwise”.
