The children were all under 16 years old. They are either orphaned, or come from poor households and disadvantaged areas. Police officers and units not only provide monthly financial support, clothing, and school supplies, but also visite the children on a regular basis and encourage them to study and work hard.
Sponsoring and adopting disadvantaged children is part of a widely-implemented model in many grassroots police units in Gia Lai province. The movement is spearheaded by the provincial police women’s union.
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Thi Ngoc Thuy is head of the Women’s Union of the provincial police department. She said: "We hope that these sponsorship models will scale-up and improve in quality and effectiveness. They spread our humanitarian spirit and help care for, educate, and protect orphans and disadvantaged children."
