Doug Mills of The New York Times, who captured the moment a bullet flew by President Trump's head during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024, won the breaking news photography prize.

The Washington Post won the prize for breaking news reporting for their coverage of that same attempted assassination, but with audio and visual forensics in addition to traditional reporting.

Reuters was awarded the investigative reporting prize for “Fentanyl Express,” a series that examined the drug trade behind America’s opioid crisis.

The Times won in collaboration with The Baltimore Banner, a nonprofit news outlet, for an investigation into the deadly opioid crisis.

The New Yorker won three prizes, for commentary and feature photography as well as for its investigative podcast “In The Dark.”

The national reporting prize went to the staff of The Wall Street Journal for its coverage of Elon Musk, the world’s richest man.

The Pulitzer Prizes, established in 1917, are awarded annually by Columbia University to recognize excellence in American journalism and letters.
