Aemet said temperatures during the recent heat wave were 4.6 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average, exceeding July 2022’s previous peak of 4.5 degrees above average. The period from August 8 to 17 was the hottest 10-day period recorded in Spain since 1950.
The Carlos III Health Institute last week estimated that more than 1,100 people had died due to the heatwave. The toll has raised alarms over the impact of climate change on public health.
Scientists say climate change is causing heatwaves worldwide to become longer, more intense, and more frequent.
