The provision of equipment marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and Vietnam, July 11.
The hand-over is part of the non-refundable ODA project on enhancing forensic capacity to identify war remains through cooperation, technology transfer, and equipment provision, sponsored by the US Government.
After nearly two years of implementation, project results have been remarkable. The success rate of DNA extraction from remains has increased from 22% to 70%. Gene sequencing opens up the possibility of matching distant relatives up to four or five generations, something that has never been achieved before.
The application of advanced technology to the DNA identification of the remains of Vietnamese martyrs contributes to the meaningful humanitarian effort that both countries are pursuing.
