The workshop at the Ha Vi Communal House links traditional lacquer art with contemporary life as artisan Nguyen Tan Phat re-imagines the legendary hero Saint Giong using traditional materials with a modern approach.
Phat said that Giong’s horse represents strength and national unity. "In this workshop, I hope to share its cultural values and encourage you to overcome your personal challenges," he added.
Participants can try basic traditional lacquer techniques – painting, eggshell inlay, and coloring – while exploring horse imagery in folk and contemporary art. Two high school students from Hanoi said:
"I took part in the eggshell inlay process, using crushed eggshells and mother-of-pearl, which makes each piece unique. This art form deserves wider promotion."
"Taking part in this workshop let me experience a new art form. It will support my university applications while teaching me patience and craftsmanship."
