January 2025 was the warmest on record globally, says Copernicus

The temperature is 1.75 degrees Celsius higher than in the pre-industrial period, while the average temperature on the European mainland increased by 2.51 degrees compared to the average level of January in the period 1991-2020.

Also according to the report, outside Europe, temperatures were most above average over northeast Canada, northwest Canada, Alaska, and Siberia. Most of Africa, southern South America, and Australia had warmer-than-average temperatures, with Australia having its second-warmest January in a record dating from 1910. Antarctica also experienced temperatures that were predominantly higher than average.

The average sea surface temperature between 60 degrees north and 60 degrees south reached 20.78 degrees Celsius, the second highest recorded in January 2025, behind January 2024.
