In Mokwa, the worst-hit area, aid from the federal government has yet to reach most of those affected. The floods, said to be the worst in the area for 60 years, swept through the towns of Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa after a bout of torrential rain.
Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima visited the disaster-stricken area and announced emergency relief, including essential goods and a reconstruction aid package worth approximately 1.2 million USD.
A spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency described the incident as one of the worst natural disasters in recent years in Niger State. The government has also established temporary shelters for affected residents.
