Pakistan is intensifying its mediation efforts to resume talks between the US and Iran, following the conclusion of a 21-hour first round of talks in Islamabad last Saturday, which ended without a final agreement.
A high-ranking Pakistani delegation, led by Field Marshal Asim Munir, arrived in Tehran on Wednesday as part of the efforts to facilitate dialogue between the US and Iran.
The move coincides with diplomatic activities by the Pakistani leadership. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has traveled to Jeddah for an official visit to Saudi Arabia. Later this week, he is also scheduled to visit Qatar and Turkey to discuss bilateral relations as well as regional peace and security issues.
Rafael Grossi, IAEA Director General, said that the agency is not involved in current US-Iran negotiations and lacks certain knowledge of the specific issues being discussed. But he said that any deal regarding Iran's nuclear program requires strict verification mechanisms, urging both parties to include the IAEA.
