The plan sets a broad objective to actively engage in the global shift toward low-carbon development, mobilizing both domestic and international resources for electricity production. It also includes researching and applying clean fuel combustion technology to gradually reduce emissions from coal-fired power plants, as well as establishing a roadmap to phase out these plants.
The plan also emphasizes the promotion and maximization of renewable energy sources for electricity generation, contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.
Vietnam will develop and implement comprehensive strategies and solutions to address climate change and energy transition, in line with its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
From now until 2030, Vietnam aims to study and pilot the installation of carbon capture systems at coal power plants using outdated, low-performance technology. The country will also pilot the application of combustion technology with biomass fuel and ammonia at these plants to reduce CO2 emissions.
By 2045, clean energy sources will contribute at least 1,160 MW to the national grid, ensuring a stable power supply.
By 2050, Vietnam plans to develop all types of clean energy sources to fully support the national power supply.
