Cambodian People’s Party ready for talks with opposition

(VOVworld)- Hun Sen, Leader of Cambodia’s ruling party, the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), on Wednesday confirmed his willingness to talk with opposition leader Sam Rainsy about any issues that affect the country’s democracy. Hun Sen, also Cambodia’s Prime Minister, said in his first public appearance since Sunday's election that the party is committed to resolving Parliamentary issues and accusations of election fraud. The CPP welcomed a joint investigative committee, saying the work must be carried out by the National Election Committee with the involvement of election monitoring organizations and parties. Hun Sen said the election results are not as important as Cambodia’s security and stability, adding that the CPP’s compromise will avoid any conflicts that can affect the people and society.

According to preliminary results of the 5th Parliamentary election on Sunday, the CPP secured 68 of 123 seats, leaving the other 55 seats for the Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP). The CNRP has rejected the result, demanding that a joint committee investigate voting irregularities and warning of a massive protest across Cambodia this Sunday.
