EU offers farmers aid, more land amid Russia-Ukraine conflict

(VOVWORLD) - The European Union will distribute 550 million USD to farmers and allow them to grow crops on fallow land in order to mitigate food price spikes and potential food shortages expected to result from the conflict in Ukraine, says Reuters.

Recognizing that farmers will face higher fuel and feed prices, the EU will distribute the money to the farmers hardest hit by the crisis, particularly those engaged in more environmentally friendly production.

The EU will also allow farmers temporarily to grow crops on the 6% of EU agricultural land that has been set aside to boost biodiversity.

The EU said its efforts will concentrate on ensuring the availability of seeds and diesel.
