The 7.7-magnitude earthquake wreaked havoc across central Myanmar, displacing tens of thousands and causing widespread destruction. Relief efforts have been severely hampered by ongoing conflicts, particularly in the Sagaing region.
International aid organizations have urged Myanmar’s government to allow humanitarian workers to access quake-stricken regions, including areas controlled by opposition forces. Many countries are stepping up support for Myanmar. Australia announced a 4.1-million-USD humanitarian aid package to be distributed through international and local partners. China has pledged 13.7 million USD in emergency assistance and has sent a rescue team to the affected areas.
