This is an important first step toward a lasting cessation of hostilities. The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, which went into effect on November 27, has largely held, although both sides have accused the other of repeated violations.
As part of the agreement, Lebanese troops and UN peacekeepers will be deployed in southern Lebanon as Israeli troops are withdrawing over a 60-day period.
Hezbollah is required to withdraw its troops north of the Litani River, about 30 kilometers from the border, and dismantle its military infrastructure in southern Lebanon.
