At the Plenary Session on Extremism and Inequality within the framework of the Defense of Democracy Initiative, during a working visit to Barcelona, ​​Spain, on Saturday, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said that South Africa will submit a draft resolution on the establishment of an International Panel on Inequality for adoption by the UN General Assembly at its 80th session, scheduled to resume in 2026.

President Ramaphosa stated that the proposed commission, inspired by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, will be tasked with monitoring global inequality, assessing their causes and consequences, and recommending policies. Putting inequality on the global agenda is necessary to strengthen democracy and social justice, he added.
